2020 “Find-Your-Role-Model” Session Series No. 56 held

On 26th October, we hold the 56th Find-Your Role Model session. We invited Dr. Satoshi Ezoe, Director of the Global Health Policy Division, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) since August 2020. This was our third online FYRM session.

Dr. Ezoe was engaged in the areas of global health in Ministry of Health Labor and Welfare after initial clinical training. He later received an MPH and MPA from Harvard University. Then he worked at the UNAIDS Headquarter in Geneva (2009-2012). Dr. Ezoe was the first appointed Senior Coordinator for Global Health (2015-2017), and most recently served as Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations (2017-2020), where he facilitated global health initiatives including the UN General Assembly High-Level Meetings on tuberculosis (2018) and Universal Health Coverage (2019).

During the FYRM session, Dr. Ezoe first told us about his career and personal background. He explained the difference between an MPH and MPA and what he learned at Harvard during that time by using an example of one of the classes he too called ‘Leadership’.

Secondly, Dr. Ezoe explained Japan’s role as a leader in global health by explaning the UN General Assembly High-Level Meetings on Universal Health Coverage (UHC). In this meeting, the declaration to provide basic medical care to all people and eliminate poverty due to medical expenses by 2030 was approved. Based on his own experience, Dr. Ezoe shared his views on Japan’s strategy to take leadership in global health. He mentioned that commitments from world leaders’ commitment is essential. He also said that Japan’s long history of UHC and the longest life expectancy is a convincing argument for UHC. Furthermore, he emphasized that accomplishing UHC is more important now because of COVID-19.

Finally, Dr. Ezoe gave us advice for the future. In the global health field, there are various tasks ranging from in-person patient treatment to policy making. Thus, it is important to think of what kinds of tasks we believe would be the most rewarding. This session was a great chance for the participants to consider global health in more detail and their future careers.
