HSLP Global Perspectives 1 Summer Intensive Course
- Contemporary Japanese Society and Culture -
From intimate perceptions of “quality of life,” to the geo-politics of the 2014 Ebola crisis, medicine is only ever practiced and received through culture. As contributors to a global health care community, young medical practitioners benefit from an understanding of modern health care as a fundamentally socio-cultural domain positioned at the intersection of the science of medicine and cultural values and ideas regarding sickness, the body, and life itself.
This course introduces students to basic social science concepts through an exploration of modern Japanese society. For those in HSLP, these concepts will become a foundation for learning about global health, power, and inequality in GP2 & LHS2. For other students, this course will be a unique opportunity to learn about Japan with native Japanese students, as well as improve critical thinking skills and expand cultural awareness.
