【Topic 1】 Healthcare systems of Japan and the UK

The Japanese healthcare system is based on social insurance, while the UK has a state-run system (National Health Service; NHS). The former system is financed by the premiums of medical insurance, and citizens can choose their medical institution. The latter system is financed by taxation and provides free healthcare to all citizens. Let's discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each system from the perspectives of healthcare providers and service users.

日本では社会保険システム、イギリスでは国営システム（National Health Service; NHS）によって医療費が賄われている。社会保険システムにおいては、国民が納める医療保険の保険料を医療費の財源としており、国民は自由に医療機関を選択できる。国営システムは税金を財源としており、全国民が無料で医療を受けることができる。医療従事者及び患者の立場から、各制度のメリット・デメリットについて話し合ってみましょう。


【Topic 2】Working Environments in Healthcare: Challenges and Actions

Healthcare providers’ long working hours and poor working environments are grave issues around the world. Junior doctors in England, who make up half of all doctors in the NHS, launched the longest strike in history in January 2024, walking off their jobs for 6 consecutive days. Over 1 million surgeries and appointments were canceled as a result. In Japan, labor reforms (働き方改革) for healthcare workers are to be enforced by 2024. Let’s discuss the current challenges surrounding healthcare working environments, and sustainable ways to improve them.

世界各国において、医療従事者の長時間労働は長年深刻な問題となっている。 2024年1月には、英国のジュニア・ドクターら（全医師の約半数を占める若手医師）は賃上げを求め、史上最長のストライキを実施した。その結果、100万件以上の手術や予約がキャンセルされ、医療の混乱を招いている。日本では、医療従事者の働き方改革が2024年までに施行される。医療従事者の労働環境における、現状の課題と改善策について話し合いましょう。
